The club’s annual Five and Under Scrod Spiel was held this past weekend. We had
eighteen teams (equaling last year’s record high) compete for the coveted Scrod pin
and their name on the championship plaque. The theme for this year’s event was
Gilligan’s Island as the SS Minnow crashed onto the shores of Falmouth. Paula Howe
and team turned the club into an uncharted island of Gilligan nostalgia with palm trees,
bamboo huts and more.
The event kicked off Friday afternoon with the initial 1:45pm draw setting the tone for
the weekend with three tight games, including Greg Lauer’s team having the first of their
three straight games with draws to the button needed to decide the winner.
There were many thrilling games, close finishes and mighty comebacks. The meals
were expertly prepared, and the ice was great all weekend – always a winning formula
for any spiel. Sam Fischer once again was our fish master extraordinaire as his scrod
preparation at the Saturday night dinner was treat for all. Steve Davis repeated as the
winning skip in a thrilling First Event finale on the last shot of the spiel. The winners and
finalists for each event were:
1st Event Winners – Mary Ann’s (skip Steve Davis, vice Bob Butcher, second Marie
McDermott, lead Elisha Place)
1st Event Finalists – Gilligans (skip Lauren Kleinas, vice Nadim Jamal, second Joe
Sain, lead Kellie Porter)

once again kindly donated the fresh schrod for the Saturday Dinner.
A big thank you to the Wednesday Competitive League, the Ice Scrape Crews and
time-generous friends for volunteering as a spiel of this size does not happen
without a large volunteer effort. I would like to thank:

It was a great event, and I am sure the participants cannot wait for next year’s spiel to
try their luck and display their skills again,
