On Saturday, December 8, 2024, The Cape Cod Curling Club relaunched our Little Rocker Bonspiel. This tournament is for kids ages 12 and under who can throw a full sized stone down the full length of a sheet (Not a small feat when many don't weigh much more than the stone!). Before Covid, Little Rock bonspiels were a much more common event. The circuit in our region kicked off here at Cape Cod in early December, and an event happened at other clubs each month until March. With Covid these spiels all disappeared. We are so excited to see that this year they are coming back.
At this year’s Little Rocker Bonspiel, two teams from Broomstones faced off against two teams from Cape Cod. Over the course of this one day event the kids played three 4-end games; enjoyed lunch, cookies, Maura’s famous hot chocolate; and competed in something unique to Cape Cod: Curling Limbo. The teams played a full round robin, with points deciding our first, second, third, and fourth places. Cape Cod won first place with Broomstones taking second and third place.
This was the very first bonspiel for all of the kids who participated and it was our goal to make it fun and memorable. The smiles on everyone’s faces, from the kids to the parents, lit up the warm room. Our kiddos are already asking “When is the next bonspiel?” Thankfully, we can tell them January, as Broomstones is also bringing back their Little Rocker bonspiel.
To everyone that helped us make this event so magical: Thank you, thank you, thank you! When we put out the call for volunteers, our club members did not hesitate to step in and help. There is no doubt in our minds that some very good core memories were made that day. The next day, at our regular Sunday practice, the kids were still absolutely jubilant and even more solidly hooked on curling!
Our cookies have all been eaten and our hot chocolate stores have been depleted. Thus ends the 2024 Cape Cod Little Rocker Bonspiel. On to 2025!
