As always, this year’s Thornton Cup championship game at the Cape Cod Curling Club was bittersweet. It’s not difficult to understand why; the game marks the end of the curling season.
The winners of the winter session open leagues battled it out in playdowns to determine who would square off for the Thornton Cup trophy. Emerging from the six-team field to play in the title game on April 5 were Team Benton, winner of the Monday night league, and Team McIvor, winner of the Sunday league. In a thrilling finale, where eight ends were not enough to determine a winner, Team Benton emerged victorious after the extra end.
Team Benton was skipped by Ryan Owens, Neel Aluru played vice, Dave Rumrill curled second and Dave Benton threw lead rocks. Team McIvor was skipped by Tom McIvor with Kieran Chapman playing vice, Peter Jones throwing second rocks and Mike Jones throwing lead.
Congratulations to all league winners and thank you for a most entertaining end of our season.
